From May 4th to 8th, 2026, volunteers from two youth heritage workshops will meet at the Mildenberg Brickworks Park to work together on historical sites and experience practical monument preservation firsthand. The Lübeck and Brandenburg youth heritage workshops are participating.
During the seminar week, the young people dedicate themselves to various projects on the museum grounds. These include the restoration of the historic barge, work on various jetties, and restoration work on military field railway carriages on the site of the old brickworks. In addition to hands-on activities, the program also encompasses documentation, organization, and on-site catering.
The seminar takes place in a natural, deliberately simple setting: Participants stay in tents directly on the grounds and largely organize their own daily lives. The aim is to impart practical skills while simultaneously raising awareness of the importance of preserving cultural heritage.

Against the backdrop of the museum harbor, the volunteers will present their work on the historic barge. There will be opportunities to talk to the participants and project leaders, as well as for taking photos and videos.
Background: Youth Building Workshops
The Youth Heritage Workshops are a program for young people undertaking a voluntary year in historic preservation. The Lübeck Youth Heritage Workshop works with placement sites throughout Schleswig-Holstein and focuses, among other things, on maritime heritage preservation. The Brandenburg Youth Heritage Workshop oversees projects involving historic buildings, including village churches, timber-framed houses, and individual monuments, and has its own seminar center at Heiligengrabe Abbey.
